The South Segment of the Beacon Ave S Safety Project extends along Beacon Ave S from S Myrtle St to 39th Ave S. The main project goal is improving safety for everyone living, working, and traveling in Beacon Hill. The project will include repaving and safety improvements for people walking, biking, and driving.

The project is currently in the early design phase, and we are gathering feedback from the community to inform our designs. The project will be in the design phase through fall 2027 and will begin construction in 2028.

Project Area Map

Project Improvements

This project will build roadway improvements that make it easier to walk, bike, roll, and take transit, while continuing to support people driving, buses, and freight vehicles. Project elements include:

Multi-use path improvements from S Myrtle St to 39th Ave S to make it safer to walk, bike, roll, and take transit.
Enhance street crossings along Beacon Ave S between S Myrtle St to 39th Ave S to improve safety for people walking, biking, rolling, and taking transit.
Redesign parking and travel lanes south of S Myrtle St, near the former Van Asselt Elementary School.
Update the S Myrtle St signal to improve traffic flow, create separation between different modes of travel, and keep all travelers safe.

Additional project elements will be informed by the City’s Complete Streets Policy (2007). The policy directs SDOT to design streets for people walking, rolling, biking, taking transit, and persons of all ages and abilities, while promoting safe operations for all users.

Background

We want to make it safer and easier to travel along Beacon Ave S for everyone, no matter how they get around. This project continues to build out the bike network connecting to the bike lanes on S Columbian Way, S Myrtle St, and the Chief Sealth Trail. We're planning a bike route in Beacon Hill to help this area meet the following transportation and community needs:

Make walking, biking, rolling, and taking transit safer for people of all ages and abilities.
Repave worn sections of the roadway to keep the street in good shape for years to come.
Build on the North Segment (Beacon Ave S and 15th Ave S Safety Project), which finished improvements from the Dr. Jose Rizal Bridge to S Spokane St in fall 2025.

We heard from community through the Seattle Transportation Plan and the 2024 Seattle Transportation Levy and they consistently identified Beacon Ave S as one of Seattle’s highest-priority corridors for safety and mobility improvements.

Residents emphasized concerns about:

Cars speeding
Difficult pedestrian crossings
Unsafe conditions for people walking, rolling, biking, and accessing transit

And that they want:

More reliable transit service
Improved access to Beacon Hill Link Lightrail Station
ADA upgrades
Safer connections to schools, parks, businesses, and other neighborhood destinations

This safety improvement project, in tandem with the Beacon Ave S Safety Central Segment project, directly responds to these community-identified needs by redesigning the street to improve safety, accessibility, and transit reliability, better supporting the diverse travel needs of Beacon Hill residents and businesses.

This project ties directly to the City's larger transportation goals:

The Seattle Transportation Plan (STP) is the city's 20-year vision for how people get around. This project supports its top goals of safety, mobility and equity.
The STP equity key moves guide our work, including centering the voices of communities of color and prioritizing investments in neighborhoods that have not received enough support in the past.
Beacon Hill is one of the highest equity priority areas in Seattle, so investing here helps meet the STP goal of directing resources where they are needed most.
The Seattle Transportation Levy helps pay for these corridor improvements. Beacon Ave S is named in the Levy as a corridor for paving, transit and bicycling investments.

Funding

This project is funded in part by the Seattle Transportation Levy and the Safe Streets for All Grant.

Schedule

Planning (completed): We began planning for this project in 2019 and was completed in 2025.

Design (in progress): We're kicking off design in spring 2026 and will finalize by fall 2027.

Construction: We will work with the community to understand their needs. We will share information about the construction schedule and activities. Construction is expected in 2028 - 2029.
